Book Review- Breathing Room By Marsha Hayles

Book Review-Breathing Room

Rating: 4/5

Are you looking for an inspiring and interesting novel? If you are, then Marsha Hayles’ book “Breathing Room” is for you. This is book is about Evvy Hoffmeister, a thirteen year old girl who gets Tuberculosis (a lung disease) in 1940.  Though she gets sent to a sanatorium (a place like a hospital) to get better, she isn’t sure about that. After all, she’s separated from her family and alone. But maybe not. She’s sharing a room with a few other girls with interesting personalities, and they will help her get through hard times. Slowly, Evvy starts to get stronger- both mentally and physically, and shows as a result how you can get through hard times. I encourage you to read this book if you like both inspiring and interesting stories.
First of all, the book is historically accurate. The back of the book shows this; in both her author’s note and acknowledgments she talks about the resources she used, people she met, and her own experiences that she used to make sure this book is correct. Another thing that I enjoyed with the book is the narration and plot- I liked how Evvy would reflect on life and how she saw her predicament as a way to get stronger. She would express her feelings about others, and be honest with herself. This also relates to the strong character development- Evvy went into the sanatorium scared and unsure, and during her time there she became a strong and a changed person.
However, to some people, this book may seem dull and boring as there is not much action- again; the book focuses more on the narration and characters. You may also feel like the author overdoes it with drama. There is a couple of deaths, and explanations of emotions.
This book held my interest because it was narrated by a girl with an interesting point of view. I also liked how the author was very descriptive because she talked about all the girls’ emotions and their personality. The author also balances lightheartedness (humor and sarcasm) and suspense (what will happen next?) well.
The book affected me because it shows how you can learn to cope with a loss or disappointment, such as how the girls coped with losing a friend. It also shows the importance of others who support you.
You can easily connect this book with other girls- such as ones with cancer or any other troubles, mainly because the girls had to cope with hardship themselves.
This book is historical fiction, and I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about history and those who enjoy connecting with dynamic characters.
Reading this book will change your point of view on struggles and hardship.

School Tips- The morning and the night before

Hey Peepsos! We're going to start a new series, called school tips. You may probably already know these tips, or they may help you! If you noticed the title, the first one is going to be the morning and the night before.
Enjoy, and implement them!

1. BEEP!BEEP!BEEP!BEEP!
That's the sound of the dreaded alarm clock. Yup, getting up (for me) is one of the hardest things ever. But you have to, whether you sunny side up or a sloth. (They sleep most of the day). But hey (that rhymes!) you don't want to be late for school! Some tips to help you get up:
  •  Set like, half a dozen alarm clocks. Many phones come with alarm settings, so use it! Set one after the other, in different rooms, on the loudest volume as you possibly can. That way, you'll have to get up to snooze them all, and by that time you'll be awake!
  • If you can't set more than one, set the alarm so for away you'll have to get up to snooze it, or hide it somewhere in your room so you'll have to dig through something to get it..
  • Use a human! Your older bro or sis, or mom or dad can be the ones to push you out of bed. This is probably the best, because humans are better than alarm clocks.
  • EESS! What? It stands for eye, eye, sit, scratch. First, when you're lying down, open one eye, just one eye, and keep it open for 20 seconds. Then open the other eye, and keep both open for 20 seconds. Sit up, scratch your head (this apparently wakes your brain cells) and ta-da! You're awake! The hardest part of this(for me) is keeping my eye(s) open.

2. Get a spot
Huh? What's that s'posed to mean? It means, find a spot to put your stuff for the next day.. Do you share a bathroom or room with a sis or bro? If you do, reserve a spot to set out your clothes for the next day, or put a box with your toothbrush/toothpaste and lotion, hairbrush, etc. And even if you don't share a room, you still need a spot to put your stuff where you get changed, shower, brush, grab your bag where people know not to touch it.

3. Plan Ahead
WHY do I need to plan ahead for the next day? Because I said so. No, just kidding. In the morning, it makes things go a LOT quicker. No more searching for clothes, or wondering why you didn't notice the toothpaste was over. Again, this goes hand in hand with finding a special spot for your stuff: Put next days stuff in those spots, and you'll be ready.
Believe me, I save about 15 minutes each morning because I'm not digging through messed up clothes drawers for clothes, or running around looking for lotion.
The same goes for your backpack. Set it up as soon as you finish your homework, and double and triple check to make sure you finished it all.

That's it for today! We hope these were some good tips, and there'll be more coming soon!
Have a good night (or day)!

Song of the week-1

Hi guys-
We are going to start a song of the week. There will be a new genre every two weeks. And don't worry, all the songs have no bad words in them (for all you little peeps out there). The genre for the next two weeks is classical music. One of the songs for this week is Canon in D major by Johann Pachelbel.
This song is amazing because it is sooo calming and great for background music while your working or doing homework.

Riddles (contains answer for second riddle)

Hi guys-
I know it's been a long time since I posted riddles, but, here is the answer to the last riddle. The state was Ohio because the first O is round, it's high in the middle because the two middle letters are H and I, and finally the last O is round. This one was pretty hard, and I didn't get it even after I looked at the answer. Anyway, this one should be easier.

Next riddle: A dad and his son were riding their bikes and crashed. Two ambulances came and took them to different hospitals. The man’s son was in the operating room and the doctor said, “I can’t operate on you. You’re my son.”
How is that possible?

Merry Christmas! And insights for the New Year

Hi guys!
Merry Christmas! How is winter break going? What did you get for Christmas? I got a pack of 64 markers- not much, but it's still awesome. My brother got new "fast shoes"- A.K.A Skechers.
Anyway, I hope you guys have a great holiday.

Did you guess yesterday's clue? Yup, today I'm posting about cool stuff about next year.
I'm really excited for this year. This year for me was uneventful, but I'm hoping next year will be better, what with my New Year's Resolutions and getting older.
For many, it's been a hard year.
And, next year the race for president starts to heat up. I'm hoping for a woman prez!
Also, the Apple Watch is coming out, and a possibly bigger iPad.
Virtual reality, among others is coming as well.
I have a feeling 2015 is going to be a great year- and I didn't think it like that for 2014.
Share anything about 2015 in the comments or our emails (if you know them) using the hashtag #getreadytogo15, including ideas for different types of posts. I'm starting to think Art Box (arts and crafts) and Writer's Workshop (tips for writing).
See you tomorrow!

Christmas Eve!

Hi people!
It's Christmas eve, and Santa's coming soon.
Even if you don't believe in Santa, we all do enjoy the break from school. :)
From now until New Year's Eve, we'll be posting about awesome stuff.
Like ideas for a New Year's Party, or insights for the New Year, or even a quiz!
(We'll see...)
And today, I'm going to ask you guys: What should the Next Book of the Week be?
I feel that this blog is going to need revamping, and it's going to start with reader involvement.
So two things to comment, email, or tell us about:
1. The Next Book of the Week?
2. Look through this blog, and see if you have any possible to do suggestions.
See you tomorrow!
Here's a clue for tomorrows post : On ear has been ok, but I'm looking for my next ear to be AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
